Your first yoga class: an honest guide

Nobody walks into their first yoga class feeling calm. You are wondering what to wear, whether you will be the only beginner, and what happens if your hamstrings file a formal complaint. Here is the honest version of what to expect.

You do not need to be flexible. We will say it louder: flexibility is a result of yoga, not an entry requirement. Half the room cannot touch their toes either. The other half could not two years ago.

Wear anything you can move in. Leggings, shorts, an old race t-shirt, all fine. Mats, blocks, and straps are free to borrow and yes, we actually wash them.

Arrive fifteen minutes early the first time. We will show you the room, where the props live, and where the bathroom is. You can put your mat near the back if that feels safer. Everyone does at first.

During class, the teacher will offer options for most poses. Take the easier one. Taking the easier option in your first month is the single most experienced-looking thing you can do.

And if it all gets much, child’s pose is always available, no permission needed. The person glistening on the next mat has used it a hundred times.

Ready? The intro offer is two weeks of unlimited classes for $49, which is enough time to try a few styles and find your people. Start with anything labeled Beginners or Restorative, and book Marcus if nerves are the main event.
